Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer receives Clinton peace award
Government peace panel chief negotiator Miriam Coronel-Ferrer on Thursday received The Hillary Rodham Clinton Awards for Advancing Women in Peace and Security for 2015.
The award, which was created by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security in 2014, aims to recognize the role of women in promoting peace through global, political and cultural borders.
Coronel-Ferrer who has been spearheading peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front was given the award at Georgetown University in Washington DC.
“It took 17 years of hard negotiations before the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front signed an Agreement that aims to stop the war,” Coronel-Ferrer said in her acceptance speech.
“This Agreement will enable MILF combatants and other disenfranchised segments of the Moro population to participate in meaningful autonomous governance,” she continued.
Ambassador Staffan de Mistura, a former United Nations envoy for Afghanistan, also received the award. — Andrei Medina/DVM, GMA News
