LOOK: Lawmakers, guests celebrate Filipino creations for PNoy’s last SONA

(Updated 11:40 p.m.) One of the most awaited—and criticized—parts of the event surrounding the President's State of the Nation Address is the arrival of lawmakers and guests at the Batasan Complex, where they hit the red carpet in their best formal wear.

With its Filipiniana theme, the SONA is one of the few highly publicized national events that highlight Filipino fashion and culture. At the Pres. Benigno Aquino III's sixth and final SONA on Monday, the guests were attired in finery created by local designers that tapped into their roots and showcased the diversity of Philippine cultures.

Rajo Laurel, a SONA favorite, dressed Tootsy Angara in a silver two-piece ensemble. Laurel said that this creation allows Sen. Sonny Angara's wife to wear the skirt at another event.

Sen. Grace Poe also donned a Laurel—a white terno with golden detail on the sleeves and on the hem. Earlier, at the opening session of the Senate, she wore a white gown by another designer who was well-represented at the event, Paul Cabral. Cabral, in fact, counted the President himself as a client at this SONA.

Top fashion designer Inno Sotto's creations were also showcased this year.

Heart Evangelista, wife of Sen. Chiz Escudero, was in a simple white gown with no beadwork or any embellishments save for feather-like sleeves that looked like angel's wings. She complemented the simple but stunning look with unobtrusive jewelry.

Diwa Rep. Em Aglipay-Villar, who is seven months pregnant with her first child with Las Piñas Rep. Mark Villar, showed off her baby bump in a body-hugging Sotto gown.

Meanwhile, Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares wore a barong with a message, noting that the state of the MRT is the state of the nation.

Ever the non-conformist, Sen. Loren Legarda donned a piña top by Marina Antonio—an heirloom item from her late mother Bessie Legarda—over a black tank top and jogging pants.

She accessorized it with indigenous jewelry: a bracelet from Kalinga, earrings from Abra, and a necklace from Vigan. Completing her look were shoes from Marikina and a crocheted bag from the Bauang Crochet Association in La Union.

Earlier in the day, at the opening session, Legarda wore a plain black top and pants accessorized with a Bontoc necklace, Ilonggot earrings, a recycled bag made by the women of Bgy. Holy Spirit, and shoes from Marikina.
