The State of the Nation Address is a much-awaited event not only because the President has to report on the state affairs but also because it has become a fashion event. During the SONA, politicians, government officials and dignitaries have their chance to pose and wave on the red carpet, and this year was no different.

Social media has become the weapon of choice for most critics, and that’s why the attendees put a lot of thought into what (and who) they wear. Dressing appropriately for this state event is crucial, as politicians and officials knows that they represent their constituents. The impact of what one chooses to wear has a great effect on the message they want to send out. So this year, let me give a run-down of hits, misses and hall of famers.

The hits

1. Fille Cainglet – the color and the great show of restraint in accessorizing makes this a hit. Subtle elegance comes to mind.

2. Dawn Zulueta – The sleeves are the highlight and everything else is kept simple.

3. Rep. Lani Mercado – She knows how to wear her terno, which is a fresh lilac color with embroidery on the bodice. However, that pony-tail can use an update.

4. Shalani Soledad Romulo – The emerald green terno was fresh and alluring, and the cut complimented her very well.

Most improved

Senator Nancy Binay – After last year's unfortunate outfit, Binay turned to Randy Ortiz, who came up with something that is not a miscalculation to wear. The midnight blue and the texture of the design gave her dress much depth. This year, she came like she intended to win the red carpet war.

Hall of Famers

1. Lucy Torres-Gomez – she has been consistent with her choices of color, design and always carries herself with quiet confidence. Fresh take on the flower on the hair.

2. Heart Evangelista – knowing that she IS Heart, she keeps her choices to elegant whites and everything else is downplayed. She knows the rule subtlety.

3. Helen Gamboa Sotto – whether she wears a period piece or modernized terno, she can get away with it.

4. Sen. Loren Legarda – we admire her trademark - supporting locally made fabrics or accessories, however this year it didn’t seem there was much effort into the dressing.

The misses

These are all lovely women, but they made a few missteps.

This is too frozen in effect.

Too much detail.

Risa Hontiveros carries her terno very well, but there's perhaps too much fabric (yellow) on this.

More misses.
