With homemade crowns, fans show off creativity at Pia’s parade
There is only one Miss Universe crown. But this did not stop fans of reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach to create their own replicas to wear.
During the beauty queen’s homecoming parade in Araneta Center in Quezon City on Monday, several fans showed off their creativity and impeccable sense of humor by wearing homemade versions of the Miss Universe crown. Some were made of plastic, while others were made of paper. People even shared their crowns with other fans to give them a chance to take photos of themselves and be Miss Universe even just for a few seconds.
Some fans also completed their look with Miss Universe sashes.
As for the real thing, Wurtzbach's crown is estimated to be worth US$300,000 and is patterned after the Manhattan skyline. It's a relatively new crown; Pia's predecessor, Colombian Paulina Vega, was the first winner to wear it.
According to Czech company Diamonds International Corporation, the current Miss Universe crown contains 311 diamonds, five blue topazes, 198 blue sapphires, 33 Bohemian crystals, and 220 grams of gold. It weighs 411 grams. According to Pia, the crown is indeed a bit heavy to wear.
In her speech after the parade, Wurtzbach did not forget to thank all her supporters, including all the Filipinos who never ceased to believe in her.
“This is not my crown. This is our crown,” she said, after encouraging her fans to take inspiration from her journey—to know that they too can reach their dreams.
