Pia Wurtzbach is new Madrina for Latino Commission on AIDS

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach has been a prominent advocate for the HIV/AIDS awareness since her win in the prestigious annual international pageant in December 2015.

She was publicly tested for HIV in January, and has also attended a workshop focusing on global statistics, HIV and its relation with the LGBT community and Gender and Sexuality from the non-profit organization Aid for AIDS.

This week, Pia has been declared as the newest Madrina for the Latino Commission on AIDS, lending her voice to the important cause of public education about the disease.

As a spokesperson, she calls for an end to the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.

“Honored to be this year's Madrina for the Latino Commission on AIDS. Thank you thank you thank you!! I was so excited to finally do a speech after a long time of training and visits in different organizations on HIV awareness,” she said.

The Filipina beauty queen added, “Thank you for accepting me as a part of your family and trusting me to be the spokesperson for this cause. I feel so welcome.”

Last February, Pia became an official #HIV Prevention Ambassador for Aid for AIDS, making her the sixth Miss Universe to receive the title.

Pia has also spent time with HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and advocacy organization GMHC in New York to learn about the organization's services and the issues involved in HIV/AIDS. —ALG, GMA News
