Help ‘Tarzan’ save forest elephants with a simple click

He is sometimes referred to as the lord of the apes, but Tarzan is also making a case for being savior of elephants.

The studios, the filmmakers, and the cast of the latest adaptation of his tale, "The Legend of Tarzan", has partnered with Stop Ivory to raise awareness on ivory poaching and the illegal killing of forest elephants.

Stop Ivory is non-government organization pushing for the implementation of the Elephant Protection Initiative and help end the illegal ivory trade.

Through stopivory.org/legendoftarzan, the public can help protect forest elephants by signing and sharing the petition to close all ivory markets. People may also choose to donate.

The stars of the movie, Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie, will also be featured in a public service announcement video as part of the campaign to stop the selling of ivory.

"The Legend of Tarzan" is based on the characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs and will be shown in Philippine theaters on June 30. Parts of the film where shot in Gabon, home to two thirds of all forest elephants. Stop Ivory estimates that only 460,000 forest elephants are alive today—a dwindling number from the 10,000,000 in 1932 when the original "Tarzan" movie premiered. — Aya Tantiangco/DVM, GMA News
