5 ways to improve the fuel efficiency of your high-mileage car

Every driver knows how high-mileage cars, or vehicles that have been running for a long distance, can pose a number of issues—among them, engine wear and poor fuel economy.

But before high-mileage car owners switch to newer models, it’s important to know and apply these tips first to improve your mileage:

Maintain your tire pressure. Keep your tires inflated at manufacturer recommended levels. Underinflated tires by eight pounds can increase rolling resistance, or the friction between the tire and the road. If there is more friction, the car has to work harder to move its weight—which may result in higher fuel consumption.

Go easy on the pedals. Accelerate smoothly and don’t brake abruptly. Don’t floor the accelerator all the time to reach optimum speed. Slow down instead of hard braking. Learn to use the terrain to your advantage. On inclines, build up speed before climbing up so that you don’t have to shift down midway and let the weight move the car on a descent.

Get all geared up. Practice proper shifting without the engine knocking. If you feel that the car’s not pulling, shift down to reach optimum speed. But shift on proper revolutions per minute (2,000RPM on gas, 1,500RPM on diesel), as it gives the best mix of speed and economy.

Stop and wait. Idling burns fuel even if you’re not moving. If you are waiting for someone, switch your engine off. This not just saves on gas, it can also help keep  the air clean.

Choosing the right engine oil with key benefits. Oil is one of the most important things that your engine needs. As your car grows older, mechanical parts wear down. To help keep high mileage vehicles going, Shell developed the new Shell Helix High Mileage, an engine oil that utilizes synthetic technology specifically formulated to protect high-mileage vehicles. It is designed to provide up to 40% better wear protection, and helps prevent sludge and other damaging deposits for better performance. Shell Helix High Mileage also helps prevent leaks and reduces oil burn-off for less top-up.

To fit every need, Shell developed two variants for Shell Helix High Mileage. The Shell Helix High Mileage 10W-40 is designed for gasoline engines, while the Shell Helix High Mileage 15W-50 is perfect for light-duty diesel engines since it comes in a thicker formulation.

“We at Shell understand that every customer’s journey is different, so we come up with products that cater to their changing needs,” says Dennis Javier, Shell Lubricants General Manager.

He adds, “The development of Shell Helix High Mileage is meant to help customers with older vehicles to prolong the life of their vehicle, so that they can enjoy more memories with their trusted partner through the years.”
