BTS to return to UN General Assembly to deliver message to young people

BTS is returning to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, Sept. 23, to deliver an important message to young people all over the world.

“It’s time to reimagine a better, fairer world. Join @BTS_twt and UNICEF on 23 September for a very special message at the #UNGA,” the UNICEF shared on its Twitter Tuesday.

UNICEF executive director Henrietta H. Fore also shared on her Twitter the details of the event, which will be streamed live 10 p.m. KST (9 p.m. in the Philippines).

“Tomorrow, I will reunite (virtually) with @BTS_twt at #UNGA to share a special message with young people doing their very best to cope during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

BTS will deliver their remarks at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly during the event titled, “Protraction of the COVID-19 Crisis: Mitigating The Impact and Protecting Future Generations.”

According to the UNGA media advisory, this “high-level event convened by UNICEF/Generation Unlimited, ITU, UNDP and the Office of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General will feature three panels comprising of heads of states/governments, technology CEOs, eminent tech personalities and youth voices focused on the key themes (Connect, Respect, Protect) of the UN Secretary-General’s landmark Roadmap for Digital Cooperation and its impact on future generations.”

The program, it added, would be “focused on youth voices,” with youth speakers delivering “‘scene setter’ video interventions to open each session, thus framing the issue and theme for discussion.”

The event later marks the second time for BTS to address the UN General Assembly.

In 2018, the group gave a speech at the 73rd UN General Assembly during the launch of the Generation United campaign, which aims to get every young person into quality education, training, or employment by 2030 by focusing on secondary-age education; skills for learning, employability and decent work; and empowerment.

In his remarks, Kim Nam-joon, known as BTS leader RM, said that after releasing their “Love Yourself” albums and launching the “Love Myself” campaign with UNICEF, they started to hear remarkable stories from their fans all over the world how their messages helped others overcome their hardships in life and start loving themselves.

“These stories constantly remind us of our responsibility,” said RM.

“So, let’s all take one more step. We have learned to love ourselves, so now I urge you to ‘speak yourself.’ I would like to ask all of you. What is your name? What excites you and makes your heart beat?” he said.

“Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I want to hear your conviction. No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin colour, gender identity: speak yourself.”

Since 2017, BTS and UNICEF have been working on the “Love Myself” and #ENDviolence programs, which aim to protect children and young people all over the world from violence and make the world a better place through music. – RC, GMA News
