61-year-old man graduates from junior high school

A 61-year-old man from Northern Samar proved that it's never too late to pursue your education after recently graduating from junior high school.

According to Oscar Oida's report on "24 Oras," Merit Majerano stopped going to school back in 1976 to find work in Metro Manila.

He decided to go back to his studies, however, in order to encourage his eldest child, 16, to value their own education.

"Kinukuhaan ko ng module bago nandoon lang sila sa barkada," he said of his child, who is currently out of school.

["I fetch their modules but they just go out with their friends."]

His teachers said they were surprised when he showed up to enroll himself.

"Inapproach kami na, "Ma'am magpapa-enroll po ako.' 'Ha, ikaw 'tay? Kaya mo?' 'Opo ma'am kaya ko pa po mag module,'" shared Shayne Allegar Esponilla, one his teachers.

["He approached us, 'Ma'am I would like to enroll myself.' 'Ha, you? Can you do it?' 'Yes ma'am I can still do the modules."]

Lolo Merit proved himself shortly by diligently facing his studies despite working on the fields every day. Even when some people made fun of him, he paid them no mind.

"Meron nga nagsabi sa akin, 'Uy matanda ka na nag-aaral ka pa," he said. "Ok naman 'yan kahit matanda ako."

["Someone told me, 'you're already old and yet you're still studying.' It's ok even though I am old."]

Lolo Merit said he plans to continue to senior high school and perhaps move on to college.

Happy graduation!
