This 11-year-old boy works on his modules on the sidewalk so his street vendor mom can help him study
An 11-year-old boy has inspired many people after he was spotted studying along a busy street in Manila.
As seen on Mariz Umali's report on "24 Oras," Monday, Ronjay Dorado works on his modules amid continuous cars and people passing by along Padre Faura.
According to the Grade 3 student, he would rather stay with his mom Ronalyn, who sells things on the sidewalk, so he would have someone to guide him as studying alone at home would be too hard.
At times when he finds the surroundings too noisy or distracting, he would enter the gates of Philippine General Hospital (PGH) and study there by himself.
Ronjay hopes to finish his studies and eventually become a policeman.
"Para matulungan ko 'yung mga magulang ko, para mahuli ko 'yung lahat ng kriminal na kumukuha ng bag, ng pera [So I could help my parents, so I could catch criminals who steal bags, money]," he said.
Although Ronalyn feels disheartened by their situation, she said she has no choice as her husband's income is not enough for their family.
"Hindi sapat 'yung sahod ng asawa ko para sa pangkain namin araw-araw, kailangan maghanapbuhay talaga [My husband's income is not enough for food every day, so I need to work]," she said.
However, Ronalyn is proud to see her son working hard on his modules and determined to study despite the circumstances.
"Kahit nandito po kami habang tinuturuan ko po siya, nagagawa naman po niya 'yung modules [Even though we are here while I teach him, he's able to do his modules]," she said.
Ronjay celebrated his 11th birthday on Sunday and his wish is to go back to school with his classmates.
Though pilot testing face-to-face classes have been conducted in select schools nationwide this month, the education department recently said it has yet to pick schools from Metro Manila.
