Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula washed the feet of 12 individuals who have roles to play in the May 9 national and local elections on Maundy Thursday at the Manila Cathedral.

Included in the "12 Apostles" were first-time voters Therese Paman, Kenny Roger, and Miguel Zabala; Commission on Elections officers Joevy Domondon and Rose Alejandro, and director Thaddeus Hernan.

Joining them were electoral board members Angelique Mabasa and Dante Parungao; Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) members Dr. Arwin Serrano, Alfie Diaz and Ric Galang; and the lone media representative, Tina Panganiban-Perez of GMA News.

The symbolic washing of the feet of apostles is part of the tradition during mass on Maundy Thursdays.

Earlier, the bishops called on voters to elect candidates who will improve the people's lives, especially the poor and the vulnerable.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President and Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David said, "We need competent leaders and lawmakers with sincere intentions to serve the welfare of our communities."
