‘UP Ikot’ jeepney route pioneer Irineo Odoy passes away at 99

Irineo Odoy, the pioneer of the “UP Ikot” jeepney route at University of the Philippines Diliman, has passed away. He was 99 years old.

Citing Odoy’s grandson Gerardo Lopez, an article on the UP Diliman website on Tuesday said he died of pneumonia on April 12 at 5 p.m.

In a 2018 interview with Lopez, Odoy said he started with the “Ikot” idea in 1949 when he saw students walking long distances to get to their classes. He made it possible with a jeepney he called “Dagul.”

He continued with the route for the next nine years until other drivers began to do the same. It has since been an iconic and unique element of the Diliman campus until today.

On the post shared by UP Diliman’s Facebook page, students and alumni expressed their gratitude to Odoy for his legacy.

Enjoy your ride up there, Mang Irineo. – Franchesca Viernes/RC, GMA News
