One-legged triathlete goes viral for incredible strength, endurance

This para triathlete from Tacloban, Leyte went viral after amazing netizens with his immense strength.

As seen on Chino Gaston’s “24 Oras” report on Tuesday, 22-year-old Jake Lacaba is no different from other athletes despite having just one leg. He can still bike, swim, and run.

He is currently training for a triathlon in Clark, Pampanga this month. He considers swimming the most difficult part of the competition, but he is determined to finish.

“Mahirap po talaga pero ‘pag gusto mo, hindi mo [mararamdaman] yung hirap. Basta walang susuko. Tuloy-tuloy lang,” he said.

Jake was born with a cleft lip and only one leg. Vince Garcia, a para triathlon team coach, was the one who discovered and believed in his capabilities.

“Sabi ko, ‘I wanna see and evaluate kung anong kaya mong gawing sports.’ Sabi niya, ‘Coach, punta ako diyan sa’yo,’” Garcia said, recalling their early conversations.

“Inexpect ko magba-bus papunta dito. Ang ginawa niya, nag bisikleta mula Tarlac, hanggang dito.”

To earn funds for training, equipment, and entrance fees for competitions, Lacaba and his teammates are also working as bike mechanics.

Garcia, meanwhile, also put up his own bike shop so his para athletes can have a “fallback” once they are finished with the sports industry.

“Pwede silang maging coach in cycling, bike mechanic, swimming or running coach,” he said.

Good luck on your upcoming triathlon competition, Jake! —Franchesca Viernes/LDF, GMA News
