Here's how Rabiya Mateo, Rain Matienzo, other Sparkle artists are living a more sustainable lifestyle
Rabiya Mateo, Yasser Marta, Rain Matienzo, and Vanessa Pena were among those who volunteered for a coastal cleanup at the Las Piñas Paranaque Critical Habitat & Ecotourism Area on Friday.
The Sparkle artists were able to do their part in helping protect nature in the event organized by GMA Network Inc. and Nestle Philippines for the Kasambuhay ng Kalikasan project.
In an exclusive interview, the actors shared how they're living a more sustainable lifestyle in their own ways.
Rabiya and Rain are both very passionate about sustainable fashion.
“Because bilang artista, you’re always expected to wear something new, something branded. Pero ako as a person, ever since, I'm a fan of secondhand because yung mga damit natin, if we're going to think of it, it always ends up in coastal floor natin, sa ocean floor natin,” Rabiya told GMA News Online.
The beauty queen added that during her Miss Universe journey, the candidates were able to attend seminars where they learned how to decrease their carbon footprint.
“Ako, up until now bilang artista, kahit artista na ko, bumibili pa rin ako sa ukay, you know, mga pre-loved items,” Rabiya said.
“Kasi in that simple way, I can say na I'm making my lifestyle more sustainable and more helpful for my environment," she added.
For Rain, she said that she is looking into building a capsule wardrobe.
“I've noticed din when I started building my wardrobe, parang mas nagagamit ko siya for different guestings,” she said.
“Kasi diba sinasabi ng mga tao pag artista, bawal mag-ulit ng damit. Pero there are ways for you to show na iba yung style mo, but then these are the same clothes that you've used for over so many years,” she added.
Rain also shared that a friend, who is also an advocate of sustainable fashion, taught her that it’s okay to buy clothes but that it is important to take care of these to make them last for a long time.
For Yasser and Vanessa, they also believe that small steps done at home add up to making a bigger change.
“Hindi natin kailangan ng sobra sobra eh. Ako, eat less, consume less, buy less,” Yasser said.
“Natatapon din naman 'yung mga hindi natin nagagamit eh. Kailangan din natin maging mindful kung ano 'yung mga binibili natin, kung ano 'yung mga kinakain natin. Ayun, nakakadagdag siya sa mga waste natin. Siguro mas kailangan talaga natin i-lessen,” she added.
Vanessa also makes a conscious effort to save water and electricity at home.
“Pag nag-go-grocery, magdala ng sariling eco bag. Ganun 'yung ginagawa namin ni mama actually,” she said. —JCB, GMA News
