PLM adopts gender-neutral uniform policy for students

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) has formally removed sex-based guidelines on school uniforms, allowing students to express themselves through what they wear.

In a statement, the PLM said it issued on October 26 Administrative Order No. 21-ACA, which took effect on November 16.

This gives the students the option to wear either a plain white polo with the PLM patch or a white blouse with a tie as their top, paired with either blue-gray pants or a skirt.

The uniforms will be worn from Monday to Thursday, while civilian clothes may be worn from Friday to Sunday and on declared “free days.”

“This is a simple yet meaningful gesture to demonstrate that PLM is a safe space for academic freedom and gender expression,” PLM president Emmanuel Leyco said in a statement on Friday.

PLM said the new policy was welcomed by members and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community in the university.

Students who have medical conditions and are unable to comply with the required uniform, and those whose religious beliefs or cultural traditions prevent them from wearing the PLM uniform, are exempt from such rules upon coordination with the Office of Student Development and Services, the university said. — Richa Noriega/VBL, GMA Integrated News
