'The Victor' statue in Metro Manila taller than Statue of Liberty

A new attraction that stands on the border of Pasig and Quezon City has joined the list of the tallest public art installations in the world!

According to Raffy Tima’s report on “24 Oras,” Friday, the statue called “The Victor” stands at almost 200 feet, or 60 meters, making it taller than the Statue of Liberty at 47 meters without its pedestal.

The statue’s creators said that it symbolizes the success of Filipinos around the world.

“It’s really the global Filipino. It is to honor those hardworking Filipinos who are doing global accomplishments and still sort of honoring their Filipino pride,” says Fil-Am artist Jefre Manuel-Figueras, designer of The Victor.

Although the statue looks like it is made of solid steel, its skin is perforated and looks like mesh to resist strong storms.

“That is one of the reason why it’s made of a perforated stainless steel, in order for the air and wind to pass through,” says project manager architect Jerome Galarpe.—Carby Basina/LDF, GMA Integrated News

The creators of the statue hope that it will become part of the tradition of Filipinos being successful in their fields.
