Cebu earthquake victims receive aid from GMA Kapuso Foundation

The GMA Kapuso Foundation has distributed aid to thousands of residents of Cebu who were affected by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake and its aftershocks early this week.

According to a "24 Oras" report Friday, many residents of Cebu have taken to sleeping outside of their homes and along the streets due to fear of aftershocks.

This includes Jefferson Lecciones and his family, who have been relying on the light of a single gas lamp as they sleep outdoors.

The family is currently financially strapped as Jefferson's work at a store was disrupted after its structure was damaged due to the earthquake.

"Takot, ka-trauma hanggang ngayon. 'Yung lamig tapos 'yung init, tapos may mga daga pa dito kasi imburnal ito," he said. "Sana po matulungan niyo pa po kami dito sa Bogo City kasi sobrang hirap."

GMA Kapuso Foundation immediately launched its Operation Bayanihan project for the benefit of the Cebu earthquake victims, delivering aid to around 4,000 residents in Bogo City on Thursday alone.

On Friday, the foundation distributed more aid to residents in the municipalities of Medellin and Daanbantayan, Cebu.

"Maraming salamat po sa GMA kasi kahit sobrang layo, dumating kayo dito sa 'min para tumulong," said Jefferson.

For those who wish to support GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, and Shopee. Visit the GMA Kapuso Foundation website for more information.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocked Bogo City, Cebu, on Tuesday evening.

According to the data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday morning, a total of 366,360 people or 80,595 families were affected by the earthquake. The number of injured people has also increased to 559.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported a death toll of 73 as of Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that aftershocks have reached 4,161, as of 12 noon Friday
