Davao Oriental earthquakes: Where to donate to help affected communities

Davao Oriental earthquakes: Where to donate to help affected communities

Davao Oriental was hit with two earthquakes on Friday.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Manay, Davao Oriental in the morning. Then on Friday evening, an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck off the shore of Manay.

According to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the second earthquake was not an aftershock but the latter half of a doublet, or two closely-timed earthquakes happening nearby. Almost 800 aftershocks were recorded as of 7 a.m. Saturday, PHIVOLCS said.

The Municipality of Manay in Davao Oriental has since declared a state of calamity following the two earthquakes, while several areas in the Davao Region provinces have suspended classes and work on Saturday, October 11.

Seven people were reported to have died following the Davao Oriental earthquakes, according to the  National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Saturday. All of the fatalities were reported in Region 11 and are still for validation.
