'KPop Demon Hunters' is Time's Breakthrough of the Year

'KPop Demon Hunters' is Time's Breakthrough of the Year

“KPop Demon Hunters” has been declared as Time’s Breakthrough of the Year!

The magazine unveiled a cover featuring animated characters Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, known as the girl group HUNTR/X.

Time said that no animated film has captivated the world since “Frozen” in 2013.

“The movie’s appeal seems self-evident in retrospect: cool girls in sick costumes, singing full-throated anthems about self-acceptance that also happen to be instant earworms, matched by inventive, vibrant visuals. And all those elements floated in on the still rising wave of Korean cultural exports enjoying global popularity, from BTS to Blackpink, ‘Parasite’ to ‘Squid Game,’” Time said.

The magazine added, “It leans heavily on specific cultural references and lacks bankable headlining stars. And it was no small risk, with a reported budget of around $100 million. While everyone who had a part in making it hoped it would find its audience, none foresaw just how big it would become.”

On Instagram, Time pointed out that personalities like Andy Samberg, Kelly Clarkson, Novak Djokovic, and more are fans of the film. Cast members also performed on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and appeared on “Saturday Night Live.”

Google’s top five most-searched Halloween costumes were characters from the film, it added.

“KPop Demon Hunters” follows K-Pop girl group HUNTR/X who double as demon hunters, as they fight to save the world.

It has become Netflix’s most popular film of all time, with more than 236 million views since its release in June.

Additionally, the soundtrack is the first to enter four simultaneous Top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

The film has won over hearts around the globe with its catchy songs, “Golden,” "Soda Pop," "What It Sounds Like," "Your Idol," “Takedown,” and more.

The sequel is reportedly coming out in 2029.
