From mud to medal: The challenge behind a trail run

It’s hard to miss the recent running boom in the country. With its numerous benefits, from curbing weight gain to managing blood sugar and hypertension, running has become the bandwagon that many people are now eager to join.

While road running is the more obvious choice, especially for beginners because of its greater accessibility, trail running is another segment of the sport that’s growing in popularity.

Trail running is a type of running that takes place on outdoor trails, including mountainous routes, uneven surfaces and river crossings, as opposed to man-made surfaces like asphalt and cement for road runs. Due to the unpredictable terrain, trail runs require more mental focus and agility to navigate obstacles and elevation changes.

Mental muscles are not the only ones doing extra work during trail runs. More stabilizing muscles are also engaged in the core, ankles, and hips because of the varied foot movements. While more muscles are recruited during a trail run, the softer surfaces are gentler on the joints compared to the repetitive impact of road running.

To start trail running, more equipment may be required, such as trail-specific shoes that provide better traction. Longer or remote trail runs may also need hydration packs, poles, first-aid kits, or navigation tools. More planning is also needed for a trail run, such as arranging a drive to the trail and making provisions for weather changes.

As trail running lets you explore natural environments, another aspect to prepare for is the dirt that you will surely get on your clothes as you run through rocks, soil and puddles. It’s an adventure that requires some toughing it out, but with the right laundry partner like Breeze, you can remain undaunted.

In a recent Spartan Trail Run sponsored by Breeze, Biyahe ni Drew host Drew Arellano, took in breathtaking views, tackled steep climbs, got drenched in mud and sweat, and discovered a different kind of challenge behind the medal at the finish line:

The true challenge of a trail run lies not only in the race itself, but in the clean-up that comes after.
