Sakura tree in Baguio blooms after seven years
After seven years, a sakura tree has bloomed at the Baguio Country Club (BCC).
In a Facebook post, BCC announced that “after seven years of careful nurturing,” one of the sakura trees in the club has finally bloomed.
“Encouraged by Baguio’s cool climate, similar to the conditions sakura trees need to thrive, its delicate blossoms have quietly emerged, marking a rare and meaningful moment,” it said.
According to the post, the sakura trees take several years before blooming, making this first bloom a “true testament to patience, dedication, and time.”
The tree is among a group of sakura trees donated to BCC by Japanese nationals Shinji Okomora and Shingeru Tsunashima, along with BCC member Paz Suzuki in June 2018 and May 2019.
The sakura or cherry blossoms are widely found across Japan, with their peak bloom typically occurring from late March to early April.
According to experts in a "24 Oras" report in 2024, it is possible for cherry blossom trees to grow in cold areas of the Philippines, but they may not bloom as abundantly.
