4K individuals affected by frost in Benguet receive aid from GMA Kapuso Foundation
Four thousand individuals in Benguet who were affected by the frost due to the cold weather have received aid from GMA Kapuso Foundation.
According to "24 Oras" on Monday, among the beneficiaries of the relief operation were farmers whose crops were damaged by the frost.
Per the report, farmers usually sell their cabbage from P27 to P35 per kilo, but frost damage can bring the price down to P15 per kilo.
"'Yung first class sana, naging second class na. I-sprinkler kami ng tubig para matunaw agad 'yung ice, para ma-prevent sa damage," said PJ Haight, a vegetable farmer.
The frost did not spare some of the farmers' flower crops, which they hoped to sell for Valentine's Day.
A plastic greenhouse would help protect the crops, but building one costs about P200,000.
"Umaabot po kami ng 3 degrees to -2 [degrees] po, said Atok Tourism Office chairman. "'Yun po ang naging problema natin, 'yung mga outside flowers at tsaka vegetables."
To provide aid, the GMA Kapuso Foundation distributed food packs to 4,000 individuals in Atok and Buguias, Benguet.
"Lubos po kami nagpapsalamat sa tulong na inyong ipinamahagi at we are glad isa 'yung barangay namin na napili na pamahagian ng relief goods," said Jordan Mesa, a barangay kagawad of Natubleng, Buguias.
