Chappell Roan controversy involving 11-year-old: A timeline of events

A hotel encounter in Brazil involving Chappell Roan, the family of football player Jorginho, and a security guard sparked controversy online, with both sides sharing differing accounts.

If you want to know exactly what the issue is, here’s a timeline of the incident:

March 21: Jorghino calls out Chappell on social media

Jorginho took to his Instagram Story to call out the “Pink Pony Club” singer following an alleged unpleasant encounter involving his 11-year-old stepdaughter at a hotel during breakfast.

In his post, Jorginho said his daughter had simply walked past Chappell’s table to see if it's really her, smiled, and returned to her seat without interacting.

His wife and child had traveled to São Paulo to see Chappell at Lollapalooza Brazil, so the little girl got excited to see her.

However, he alleged that a security guard later approached them and spoke in an “extremely aggressive manner,” accusing the child of disrespecting or harassing others.

“My daughter was extremely shaken and cried a lot,” he wrote.

March 21: Rio de Janeiro mayor bans Chappell from performing at the Todo Mundo no Rio festival

Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Cavaliere weighed in on the issue on X, saying that Chappell would never be invited to perform at the city’s Todo Mundo no Rio festival while he remains mayor.

Cavaliere also said Jorginho’s daughter would be a “guest of honor” at the upcoming festival in May.

Meanwhile, Chappell had not originally been scheduled to perform at the festival this year.

March 22: Chappell addresses issue

A day after the issue broke, Chappell addressed the incident on her Instagram Stories, saying the security guard involved was not part of her personal staff and that she did not witness any interaction between the mother and child.

“I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child,” she said.

“They did not come up to me — they weren't doing anything!“ she added.

Chappel also pushed back against assumptions about her attitude toward fans, stating that she does not hate fans or children.

She also apologized to the family, saying they “did not deserve” to feel uncomfortable.

The singer has long been known for being strict about her boundaries, especially with paparazzi. In 2024, she went viral after confronting a photographer at the MTV Video Music Awards.

She also previously called out certain fans for being "creepy," and vented on social media about fans approaching her for photos.

"I don't agree with the notion that I owe a mutual exchange of energy, time, or attention to people I do not know, do not trust, or who creep me out, just because they're expressing admiration," she said.

March 22: Catherine Harding responds to Chappell’s video

Jorginho’s wife, Catherine Harding, responded to Chappell’s video, saying that security guard was not hotel security, and while she is unsure whether he was part of the pop star’s team, he was with the singer at the time.

She asserted that public figures have a responsibility to ensure that those around them act appropriately on their behalf.

“Even if she did send him or she didn’t send him, I don’t know, for me it felt like it really overstepped a boundary,” Catherine said, adding that the security guard even told her off for not raising her child well.

Catherine said that her daughter had walked into an area that people were "free to go into," and did not approach Chappell or ask for pictures. Given that the child's stepdad is a football star and her biological dad is actor Jude Law, she is very used to being around people that are well known, Catherine added.

"She very much knows the limits," she said, adding that if Chappell did not want to be so much as looked at, then she was very welcome to eat in her room.

"I am a paying guest as well as her... this is a public area."

Chappell was in Brazil for the Lollapalooza festival held at the Autódromo de Interlagos in São Paulo.
