Over 100 women in Cebu receive free pap smear, breast exam from GMA Kapuso Foundation

More than 100 women in Cebu received free pap smears and breast examinations from the GMA Kapuso Foundation this Women's Month. 

According to "24 Oras" on Monday, among the beneficiaries of the initiative was Evelyn Cabonce of San Remigio, who works as barangay health worker. 

Earning only P300 a day from her job in the barangay, Evelyn sidelines as a bag weaver to help support her four children and make ends meet. 

"Hindi sapat sa mga kailangan sa pamilya ko, kaya gumawa ako ng mga bags, pang-sideline ko. Nung umpisa ang paggawa ko ng bag masakit sa kamay tapos tinitiis ko dahil sa kahirapan namin," she shared. 

To support and show solidarity with women this month, the GMA Kapuso Foundation offered free pap smears and breast exams to over 100 women in Tabuelan and San Remigio, Cebu. 

The foundation also distributed hygiene kits and food to the beneficiaries. 

"Ang papsmear ay isang screening test para malaman kung ang isang babae ay may cervical cancer," said Dr. Orleta Ursal, a municipal health officer in San Remigio. "Ito ay isinasagawa lamang sa mga sexually active na mga babae. Ang cervical cancer ay no. 2 most common cancer sa buong mundo."
