Gen Z prefers digital media access over traditional platforms — study

Unlike Gen X and Millennials, Gen Z is no longer into owning physical copies of the media they consume.

According to a study conducted by IGN Entertainment in partnership with Kantar and the University of California Berkeley, Gen Z prefers access to an "infinite library" of content rather than owning individual titles.

Researchers analyzed the habits of thousands of highly engaged entertainment consumers across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

They found that 71% of respondents no longer purchase physical music formats, while 70% have stopped buying physical copies of movies and television shows.

In gaming, 62% said they no longer purchase video games at full price.

Researchers also found that 59% of Gen Z frequently subscribe to and cancel streaming services.

Despite their digital-first habits, Gen Z consumers still show a strong interest in shared entertainment experiences.

The study found that younger audiences are 13% more likely than older groups to attend movie opening weekends, suggesting that major releases continue to function as social events for younger viewers. —Jade Veronique Yap/MGP, GMA News
