A total of 3,000 incoming kindergarten and Grade 1 students in La Union received school supplies from GMA Kapuso Foundation under its Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan project.

According to a "24 Oras" report on Friday, Marivic Valdez recycles unused pages of old notebooks so her three children will have something to use for the coming school year. Despite working as a farmer and masseuse, her earnings are still not enough to support her children's education.

"Ni-re-recycle, tiyaga-tiyaga lang, 'pag may kinita ka araw-araw para makaraos ng buhay, mag-ipon sampu-sampu o bente-bente," she said.

Meanwhile, Richard Edem, a single father who makes salted fish, also spoke about the struggles of making ends meet.

"Napakahirap, halos hindi ko na alam kung anong gagawin o anong iisipin para lamang kumita kasi isang banyera lang po. Nag-r-raise lang po kami ng 300, 400 lang po," he said.

To help, the GMA Kapuso Foundation distributed complete school supplies to students from 78 schools in six towns in La Union. A total of 3,000 incoming kindergarten and Grade 1 students benefited from the project.

"Maging inspiration nila ito para at least mas maganahan na pumasok ulit. Malaking tulong na ito para hindi lang sa mga bata kundi pati na rin sa mga magulang," said Genny Alay-ay, a public school district supervisor in Luna I, Luna II, and Bangar.

For those who wish to support GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, Shopee, and Palawan Pay. Visit the GMA Kapuso Foundation website for more information.
