GMA Kapuso Foundation brings free medical services to quake-hit residents in Northern Cebu

Residents of Northern Cebu who are still reeling from last year's devastating earthquake received much-needed medical assistance through the GMA Kapuso Foundation's Kapuso Kalusugan Caravan.

According to Mel Tiangco’s report in “24 Oras” on Friday, among the beneficiaries was 73-year-old Anita Ehem, who continues to make and sell suman despite enduring body pains to help support her family.

Their home was damaged by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake, forcing them to temporarily stay outside their house out of fear that it might collapse.

“Sa labas lang ng bahay, dito lang sa aming trapal. Mahirap sa loob. Baka gumuho ang semento,” she said.

During the medical mission in Medellin, Cebu, volunteer doctors from Perpetual Succour Hospital Cebu, Chong Hua Hospital, and the Cebu Provincial Health Office examined residents still facing health concerns following the disaster.

Anita sought consultation for recurring chest pains. After undergoing medical evaluation, doctors ruled out a heart condition.

"So, work-up namin baka mayroon siyang cardiac problem. Wala naman. We found out baka mayroon siyang dyspepsia," said Dr. Carlos Layese Jr., Consultant of Chong Hua Hospital Mandaue.

Aside from consultations and laboratory services, beneficiaries also received free medicines and vitamins to help improve their health.

The Emcore Foundation also partnered with the GMA Kapusong Foundation by providing free prescription-graded eyeglasses.

“'Yung presence ng optical service, maganda yan kasi isa yan sa need ng mga seniors,” Medellin, Cebu Municipal Health Officer Dr. Oliver Gimenez said.
