Breakfast, bath time, grooming, and an outfit for the day’s stroll. For many Filipino fur parents today, this could sound like the average “Day in my life” routine of caring for a child. Recently, it has also become part of caring for a pet.

In 2026, raising pets has evolved beyond filling a food bowl. Even just calling them "pets" sounds outdated – nowadays, many are proudly called fur babies. Owners are no longer just “pet owners," they are fur parents.

As frugal as Filipinos can be, many are now happily opening their wallets wider for their four-legged family members. Walk into a mall today, and you are likely to spot a Shih Tzu riding comfortably in a stroller, or a Corgi sporting a tiny outfit complete with matching shoes.

That same affection has spilled into pet fashion. From embroidered scarves and bow ties to formal wear and themed costumes, dressing up their fur babies has become another way for fur parents to celebrate the bond they share.

With the Philippines emerging as one of Asia's fastest-growing markets for pet clothing, the era of paw-shionable pets is creating new opportunities for Filipino entrepreneurs, especially those serving niche markets that are only beginning to be discovered.

A Filipino spin on this Paw-shionable phenomenon

Among the local businesses helping shape this movement is FilDogScarf, a homegrown brand that puts a uniquely Filipino spin on pet fashion.

Founded by third-generation Filipiniana maker Ani Yulo-Atanacio, FilDogScarf carries her family’s handmade craftsmanship into an unexpected space: embroidered scarves, barongs, and cultural pieces made for fur babies.

“I wanted to continue our family tradition, but in a way that felt new and truly mine,” Yulo-Atanacio said. “Since pets are now part of the family, I thought, why not let them also wear something that represents our culture?”

The first spark for FilDogScarf came during the pandemic, at a time when her family business was struggling. Yulo-Atanacio initially explored creating face masks from fabric scraps until a client from Germany requested a matching ethnic scarf for her pet dog.

Yulo-Atanacio reckoned that it was the “lightbulb moment” for her. "That simple request inspired me to combine my love for Filipiniana with pet fashion while staying true to my Filipino roots,” she said.

Aided by a small team of skilled sewers (mananahi) and embroiderers (burdadera), each FilDogScarf product passes through the hardworking hands of seven artisans before it reaches customers.

Eventually, Yulo-Atanacio realized that FilDogScarf was offering more than cute pet outfits. It gave fur babies a way to belong in family celebrations while proudly representing Filipino culture visibly.

Yulo-Atanacio added, “For many fur parents, their pets are already part of the family, so they want them to be included and properly dressed during important moments.”

Bringing niche Filipino craftsmanship to more fur parents

As FilDogScarf grew beyond weekend bazaars and pop-up fairs, Yulo-Atanacio began looking for ways to bring her handmade creations to more fur parents.

"It [soon] became a must-have for many Filipinos, calling it the best “paw-salubong” and something every Filipino pet can proudly wear.” Yulo-Atanacio said.

Fortunately, the brand found a wider audience through their socials and Shopee, where customers from different parts of the Philippines, and eventually overseas, could browse and order Filipiniana-inspired pet apparel more easily.

“Shopee has helped FilDogScarf grow beyond our local community by making our products accessible to pet owners across the Philippines.” Yulo-Atanacio shared. “Most importantly, it allowed our local craftsmanship to reach more families and create more livelihood opportunities for our sewers and embroiderers."

Through Shopee, homegrown entrepreneurs like Ani Yulo-Atanacio have been able to introduce niche products to a wider customer base while continuing to grow businesses rooted in Filipino craftsmanship. For FilDogScarf, this meant making handmade cultural pieces more discoverable to fur parents looking for something meaningful, local, and proudly Pinoy.

A future stitched with Filipino pride

Today, FilDogScarf has reached customers as far as California and Toronto, dressing fur babies for birthdays, weddings, family portraits, and other milestones worth celebrating.

For Ani Yulo-Atanacio, however, the most rewarding part isn't seeing her creations travel across borders – it is knowing that each handmade piece becomes part of a family's most meaningful moments.

"We are all unique in our own ways, yet we share the same culture, identity, and sense of community. Ultimately, we want every FilDogScarf piece to create happy memories and make both pets and their owners feel truly special," she said.

As FilDogScarf continues to celebrate Filipino craftsmanship through pet fashion, Shopee has helped the brand reach more fur parents across the country while supporting livelihood opportunities for the local artisans behind every handmade piece. It’s proof that even the most niche ideas can find their market when tradition meets the right platform.

After all, who could resist a dog dressed in a barong?
