Ghost Month 2026: Feng shui expert shares dos and don'ts
Feng shui consultant Johnson Chua shared some reminders on what people may want to avoid and do during Ghost Month, which runs from August 13 to September 10 this year.
Speaking on Friday’s “Unang Hirit,” Chua explained that Ghost Month is not necessarily a period of constant bad luck.
In feng shui tradition, however, the period is associated with stronger yin energy, which he said may influence people’s mindset, emotions, and decision-making.
Avoid risky activities at night
Chua advised people to be more cautious with activities at night, particularly those that involve being alone or being placed at greater risk of accidents.
These include late-night swimming and other activities in potentially unsafe areas.
He also advised extra caution when driving, noting that low energy or lack of focus could increase the risk of accidents.
Think twice before major decisions
The feng shui consultant also suggested postponing major life decisions or activities when possible during Ghost Month.
These include weddings, starting a new business, and undergoing non-emergency surgeries or procedures.
According to Chua, the idea is tied to the belief that the energy surrounding the beginning of an important undertaking may influence how it progresses.
For medical procedures, however, he stressed that emergencies should not be delayed. Non-urgent procedures may instead be postponed when possible.
Prayers and charity
For those who want to observe Ghost Month, Chua recommended prayers and offerings as ways of showing respect to spirits and the dead.
He also described the period as an opportunity to practice charity, which is believed to bring blessings in return.
Offerings may include food and drinks, which are traditionally presented as a way of honoring spirits.
Incense and cleansing practices
Chua said incense may be used during Ghost Month, particularly on August 27, which he identified as the central day of the festival.
For placement, he suggested putting incense in areas such as the living or dining room, especially when food offerings are also being prepared.
He also demonstrated a cleansing powder practice using an angpao containing rice, salt, and incense powder. The packet may be carried in a wallet, bag, or pocket throughout Ghost Month.
On the final day, September 10, the packet can be shaken off around the body before being discarded. Chua described the practice as a symbolic way of leaving behind negative energy from the month.
He said the practice may also be done on September 11, the first day after Ghost Month. —JCB, GMA News
