'There's no excuse for me not to graduate'

Benjie Paras remembers rookie days with son Andre on Father's Day

From his days as a basketball star to his career in show business, Benjie Paras has always been a role model to his son Andre.

And so on Father's Day, Andre did a fun vlog with Benjie as a guest. Together, they unearthed some old photos from Benjie's younger days, and discussed the story behind them one by one.

Andre revealed never-before-seen photos of Benjie of his days as a PBA rookie, as well as a hilarious snapshot of his dad on the set of his first-ever movie.

For those who don't know, Benjie starred in a comedy film called "Dunkin Donato" in the '90s with Herbert Bautista.

When Andre asked why his dad was making a face during filming, Benjie explained that it was a scene wherein he had to ride a "panghasa" bike to train because his character's basketball team was poor.

"That’s a joke during that time eh. 'Nung time na ‘yun kasi, mahirap kami, 'yung opponents namin are riding the stationary bike, treadmill, so that's my training. I'm riding the panghasa thing," Benji said.

Andre also brought out a photo of 21-year-old Benjie during an all-star basketball game, dawning some short-shorts and a "long-back" haircut.

"That was my first PBA all-star (game) (as a) rookie, so we played against the veterans. Just like you, rookie sophomore then, veteran," Benjie told his son.

Andre showed his fans a photo of Benjie graduating from the University of the Philippines (UP) in 1991.

The retired basketball star recalled how proud he was to finish his degree, especially after he had been juggling school with a hectic training schedule.

"Being an athlete, it was really hard to complete the four-years course, so I finished it in five years," Benjie told Andre.

"I still finished my degree... and the reason for that is because of my mom, Lola Alice. When I entered the PBA, I called my mom and I told her 'Mom, I was drafted in the PBA, so I'm going to play.' So (I asked) 'You are in Australia now, do you need any money? Then my mom said, 'I just want you to graduate.' Then I told her: 'Mom, money na lang'," he added.

After hearing all this, Andre asked his dad: “So there’s no excuse for me not to graduate?" to which Benjie said: "Of course."

Andre is Benjie's first child with Jackie Forster. Their second, Kobe, also takes after his father and is currently playing for the UP Fighting Maroons. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
