Bettina Carlos shares parenting lesson she learned after teaching Gummy math
Bettina Carlos shared a parenting lesson she learned from teaching her daughter math, a subject she used to dislike.
On Instagram, the actress and host posted photos of her studying session with Gummy, who was was reviewing for a math exam.
Bettina said math "really intimidates" her and she is allergic to it, so she prayed for an "open heart and mind" when Gummy sought her help.
"Lagi talaga kami nag-aaway sa math. As in. So grabe talaga dasal ko at maakawa ko sa Panginoon na gabayan kami at na hindi ako gumive up sa pagkananay at na manatili ang mga 'prutas ko' at huwag gumulong," she said.
Bettina said she realized that math is a subject she has been avoiding and rejecting in her head.
"I get agitated when I get asked about it. Di ko alam 'to. Di ko kaya 'to... And yet I expect my child to be persevering and 'diligent to study and press on?'" she said.
"What did I think my child would imbibe, what I say or what she sees? Naturally she also will be easily discouraged because I already am nega facing math myself," she added.
Bettina said she learned two things from the experience.
"One, we can't ask our kids to do something we don't do or even do first," she said. "And two, the mind is the battle field. If your mind already rejects a thought, there is no way you can entertain enjoy or embrace it."
"But God and prayers change minds and hearts. And when I did, I finally enjoyed learning grade 4 math and teaching it," she said. "Greatest reward for me was not her scores but our character growth through this."
Bettina and her non-showbiz partner Mikki tied the knot in December a few weeks after announcing their engagement.
Mikki also proposed to Gummy to allow him to be her father giving her a similar engagement ring he gave her mother. —Jannielyn Bigtas/MGP, GMA News
