Student set to graduate after enrolling in medical school with only PHP300K

A student is set to graduate after enrolling in a medical school with only PHP300,000 in their family’s bank account.

On Oscar Oida’s “24 Oras” report Tuesday, Honesty Salazar recalled when her father asked her if she was sure that was what she wanted to study because they didn’t have a lot of money.

“Nalugi po yung business namin tapos sabi po ng tatay ko, ‘sure ka na ba talaga na mag-medicine ka?’ Sinagot ko po siya, sabi ko, ‘Oo naman. Ilalaban mo naman ako, ‘di ba?” she said.

[Our business went bankrupt so my dad asked, “are you sure that you’re taking medicine?” I told him, “of course. You’ll do it for me, right?”]

To which her father answered only what a loving and supportive dad would—yes.

Honesty said one semester at medical school already cost roughly PHP300,000, so her family worked hard to make sure she would graduate. Even her older sister volunteered to drop her master’s program.

“Sabi niya, ‘gusto mo ba sa’yo nalang ‘tong pang-tuition ko? Pang-dagdag mo diyan.’ Sabi ko na lang, ‘’wag ka mag-alala, gagalingan ko na lang,’” she said.

[She asked, “do you want to have my tuition money instead? You can add it to yours.” I said, “don’t worry, I’ll just do my best.”]

Apart from her family’s help, Honesty also took part-time jobs. But their efforts still weren’t enough, and Honey considered quitting.

“Sabi ko ‘Lord, five days na lang patapos na yung enrollment. Aabot pa po ba ako?’ Tapos sabi ko, ‘ngayon pa ba? Mag-stop na ba ako? Baka hindi para sa’kin ’to,’” she said.

[I said, “Lord, there are only five days left for enrollment. Will I make it?” Then I asked, “now? Should I just stop? Maybe this isn’t for me.”]

Honesty said three days before the enrollment deadline, they were able to sell their land.

“Sabi po ni papa sa text, ‘anak, ‘wag ka mag-alala kasi ito na, may pang-tuition ka na,’” she said.

[My dad texted me, “Honesty, do not worry because here it is, you already have money for your tuition.”]

Knowing her family’s sacrifices, she focused on studying and refused dating.

“I can’t be in a commitment because I’m also scared,” she said in English and Filipino.

Honesty is now graduating from Our Lady of Fatima University with a medical degree. She is also serving her internship at a hospital in Metro Manila.

With all her achievements, she had nothing but love and gratitude for her family who stood by her.

“Maraming salamat kasi iginapang niyo. Kung nasaan man ako, kayo yung dahilan sa likod nito. Hindi ko ’yon mapapantayan ng simpleng pasasalamat lang,” she said.

[Thank you very much because you worked hard for me. Wherever I am now, you’re the reason behind it. A simple thanks won’t be enough.]

“Sana habaan niyo pa ’yung buhay niyo kasi babawi rin ako sa mga susunod na taon,” she added.

[Please live longer because I’ll repay you in the coming years.]
