True Faith vocalist Medwin Marfil says ‘I want what straight couples have’
Medwin Marfil, the vocalist of OPM band True Faith, recently went viral after sharing the great news of marrying his partner, Mark Angeles, in California.
In the latest episode of "Updated with Nelson Canlas," Medwin said getting married — like straight people do — is his dream.
“I love romantic movies,” he said in the podcast.
“I like reading love stories and all that, but I always felt like I could never be [in that situation],” he added. “I want what straight couples have. I want what I see in stories.”
According to Medwin, he was so surprised at the response they received upon getting married, even with regard to his SOGIE.
"If you follow me on social media, parang there were already hints for many years. I'm very vocal about LGBT rights ganun," he said.
"Atsaka nagulat ako na it blew up on social media. Akala ko it will be just within the fandom ng True Faith," Medwin continued.
"Pero talagang it was like grass fire on a windy day. Talagang na-pick up," he said.
In the podcast, Medwin revealed they official became a couple in June 2022. "Ever since we became us, it really felt like we were married na rin. It felt like that, you know? Parang there was this instant connection. I said yes agad sa kanya," he said.
Medwin was in the US for a show then, and stayed with Mark for a month. "After that one month, binigyan niya ako ng ring sa may Pacific Coast. Sabi niya, binigyan niya ko ng ring na parang promised me na you'll be back and all that. And I said to him, 'yeah you're very much worth coming back to.' So I guess that's it," Medwin narrated.
The same-sex couple braved a long-distance relationship, speaking on the phone multiple times a day, with each of them visiting the other every so often.
The couple said their beach wedding last May was just a confirmation of the commitment they took back in June 2022, but for Medwin it was a long-held dream manifested.
“I always wanted a wedding by the beach, and then Pacific Coast, and then it happened,” he said.
As of writing, the Philippines doesn’t allow nor recognize same-sex unions.
In Asia, Taiwan became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019.
Meanwhile, the Thai senate passed the first reading of a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in Thailand back in April.
