Students and alumni of University of the Philippines trooped to the Beach House Canteen on Tuesday to try to get one final bite of the famous barbecue at the beloved food spot in the Diliman campus.

In a report on "News to Go" on GMA News TV, reporter Dano Tingcungco described the line for the barbecue as "blockbuster."

One married couple, Patrick and Patricia Gutierrez, chose to have lunch at the canteen, which turns out to have played a large role in their romance.

She hinted that Beach House was the place where they became a couple, "nang dahil sa isang saging na minatamis."

"During nung college days namin, dito kami kumakain during lunch, kaya tambay dito rin. Eventually, when we got married, we brought our kids here," he added.

The couple also chose to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary at the canteen, as well as their renewal of vows.

Decision to close

The UP administration ordered the closure of the food spot because of its proximity to a defective drainage system near the Sunken Garden. Smoke from cooking barbecue was also a concern for the university admin, according to the report, as it caused damage to books at the nearby Main Library.

Fans of the food spot scored the decision, launching an online petition to keep Beach House open.

Owners of the canteen, meanwhile, appealed to UP administration to allow the food spot to operate.

"Eh kung yung drainage lang naman ang problema nila, eh bakit hindi na lang natin ipaayos?" said Elmer Hernandez, the owner of Beach House.

"Kung ayaw nilang ipaayos, eh di tayo na lang ang magpaayos doon sa problemang nakikita nila." - JST, GMA News
