Special Advertising Feature: The Modern Mom and Merienda 

Welcome to the future – when the people of Generation Y have become moms and dads. It seems like only yesterday when the world was coining the term for this generation born between early 1980s to the 2000s, also known as Millenials. But now, they’re guiding new generations of their own – their children – and doing it in new and fun ways. 

 

Jeanne is of Generation Y and mom to 6-year old Mikee. Now that she goes to school, Jeanne makes sure that Mikee’s baon and merienda are exciting every day. “Mikee likes different kinds of merienda. I have to make sure that it’s different everyday so she doesn’t get tired of it.” That’s one challenge of moms these days, competing for the attention of kids who are exposed to different things, thanks to social media. 

 

But it’s not a challenge for Jeanne. “I just make her different kinds of sandwiches and sometimes a little treat like a sweet-tasting one. I also add in different kinds of fruits – Mikee likes oranges, grapes, watermelon and honeydew. For her drinks, she doesn’t like water very much so to make sure she drinks what she needs, I mix in powdered juice in different flavors, like Tang.” 

 

Merienda also needs to look exciting. For this Jeanne has learned the art of Bento! “To make her more interested in her snacks, I try to make it cute and fun by doing a bit of Bento art. I cut her sandwiches into animals, flowers or fun shapes and I add some cute and colorful designs that are safe for her. The night before, I also make sure she likes what I prepare by asking her what she would like to eat in school and at home the following day.”
