Concept restaurants are driven by a concept or a theme. From their menu down to the interiors, music, and ambiance, they aim to achieve that feel. This week's episode of Saksi's Midnight Express features some concept restaurants in the metro. Host Mikael Daez tries dishes from an all-day breakfast place in Marikina and a Spanish restaurant in San Juan.

A breakfast nook at Rustic Mornings

There's a saying tossed around that goes, "jumpstart your day with a heavy breakfast." In Rustic Mornings in Marikina, you can enjoy breakfast food even if you woke up after lunch. Can you say, all-day breakfast?

Rustic Mornings gives you a feel of what it is like to have a breakfast in a garden. The place is surrounded with greenery and its interiors boast a "shabby chic" style.

Owner Portia Baluyot's family got the idea of putting up a garden restaurant from their matriarch, Mama Chit, who is a well-known cook in Marikina. Hence, she turned the family's 80-year-old piece of land of stored logs into Rustic Mornings and started sharing her family's original recipes.

One of the must-tries in the breakfast place is the crispy waffle churros, which is crispy on the outside and soft inside. Its ingredients include cinnamon sugar and homemade cream.

Upon tasting the crispy waffle churros, Daez exclaimed, "This waffle—one of the best waffles I've ever tried here in the Philippines!"

"Ang nagustuhan ko sa waffle na ito ay hindi siya mabigat. Para akong kumakain ng waffle at pancake," he added.

Viva España at Calderon restaurant

With all the Spanish restaurants in the metro, some may think that they have already tasted everything from Spain. Calderon restaurant in San Juan offers a variety of time-tested Spanish cuisine set in a place that takes visitors to Iberian peninsula.

The owner Monchet Carballo shared, "The idea was to bring back the tradition of home-cooked food, heirloom recipes, and matured experience when eating on a Sunday."

All the items on its menu are Spanish heirloom recipes. One of these is the Iberian chicken, which is roasted chicken.

How did Daez descrtibed this Calderon offering? "Ang sarap niyang kainin. Alam na alam na inalaga ang proseso ng pagluto niya. Unang kagat pa lang, ang lambot niya, parang natutunaw siya sa bibig mo." — Trisha Macas/VC, GMA News
