Cebu’s dancing inmates now baking inmates too

The famous inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center are no longer just the "dancing inmates"—they are now the "baking inmates" too.

After opening their bakery at the CPDRC, the inmates promised to introduce to the world their ensaymada, hopia and siakoy, GMA Cebu's Alan Domingo reported Tuesday.

Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III and some visiting tourists were among the guests who got a first taste of the baking inmates' specialties.

Marco Toral, a security consultant for the CPDRC, said the bakery occupies a space that was once a barangay outpost.

"Merong barangay outpost sa labas ng CPDRC na hindi na ginagamit. Sinabihan namin si Kap na 'yun ang gagawin naming outlet ng tinapay," he said.

For his part, CPDRC "mayor" Lito Granada said the income from the bakery will go to acquiring medicines for the clinic.

"Ang kita ng bakery ang kukunan namin ng pambili ng gamot na wala sa clinic, pambaon para sa ospital," he said. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
