DC Super Heroes Café opens in Megamall

After months of teasing the arrival of an “Age of Heroes”, the DC Super Heroes Cafe opened its doors at the SM Mega Fashion Hall. Combining a premium family dining experience with aesthetics and décor drawn from the breadth of the DC Universe of characters, the venue has been designed to appeal to fans of both food and comic books.

The Café is the latest venture of entrepreneur Edric Chua, perhaps best known for the successful Satchmi cafe-retail concept that helped introduce vinyl records locally to a new generation.

With a career built out of giving people curated, memorable experiences they didn’t know they needed, the Café taps into Chua’s own lifelong love of comic books.

“It’s a dream project for me, Chua told GMA News Lifestyle. “I started a gadget company (Ekonic) in 2011, making gadgets and smartphones for DC. One day, during a meeting, they (Warner Brothers Consumer Products) offered us the license for the Café, which I thought was crazy – a dream project – but given the opportunity, how could I pass that up?”

Two years on, that dream project has become a reality. GMA News Lifestyle was among the outlets invited to the Café’s media day, where guests were given a chance to sample what Chua and co. had in store for visitors.

Fans will be in superhero heaven even before they enter the surprisingly spacious interior; outside, the Café’s distinct blue signage is flanked on either side by gothic busts right out of Batman’s Gotham City, and life-sized statues of the Caped Crusader and Wonder Woman (from the recent “Justice League” film) positioned at the door to welcome visitors.

While there isn’t a Batcave area per se, the Café itself is broken into five distinct sections: The Watchtower (a posh, well-appointed area based on Batgirl’s former headquarters), the Hall of Justice (which houses a well-stocked bar and a Batmobile espresso machine!), the TV Arrowverse (The Flash would feel right at home, as both CC Jitters and Big Belly Burger are represented), an area highlighting high-end toys and collectibles, and, finally, a gift shop selling merchandise and (naturally) comics.

But there's more to the DC Super Heroes Café than just the novelty and “Instagrammability." Behind the comic-themed dishes is none other than Chef Mikel Zaguirre of Locavore Kitchen x Drinks fame. And master mixologist Kalel Demetrio of Liquido Maestro is behind the Hall of Justice bar, which offers bother coffee- and alcohol-based concoctions.
