Filipino food is 4th least popular cuisine in the world — online survey

Ah, such confusing times. After three of our beloved dishes — lechon, crispy pata, and kare-kare — made it to the world's best 100 dishes of 2019, in comes a survey that says Pinoy food isn't all that.

Filipino food is ranked as the 4th least popular cuisine in the world, trailing only ahead of Saudi Arabia, Finnish and Peruvian cuisine, according to an online study by YouGov, released on Thursday.

Based on 25,000 respondents from 24 different countries, the YouGov study showed Filipino cuisine scoring an average popularity score of 36% across the 24 nations.

Filipinos, however, showed patriotism and showed a high preference of 97% for their own cuisine.

Interestingly, the Japanese showed the most dislike for Filipino cuisine with an average score of just 21%.

According to the United Kingdom-based data company, Italian food is the most popular cuisine in the world with an average popularity score of 84%, followed by the Chinese and Japanese cuisine.

Despite the low average for Pinoy food, Filipinos are the most likely to show appreciation for international cuisines with over 67% of Filipinos who tried any given cuisine said they liked it.

Japanese, on the other hand, are found to be the harshest food critics among any of the nations surveyed with only 39% of Japanese said they liked any of the foreign food served.
