What is this ‘Dalgona coffee’ that everyone’s making, and how do I get on with the program?

If you’ve spent a lot of time on social media in the past week, you’re probably wondering what the deal is with Dalgona coffee.

To keep you up to speed: That wickedly photogenic and aesthetically pleasing cup of joe you’re seeing on everyone’s feed is a DIY coffee trend that originated from South Korea.

Another thing you should know about it is it’s super easy to make. Ingredients are: instant coffee, white sugar, and milk.

We scoured the internet the past week and  the fail-safe recipe for a decent cup of Dalgona coffee is basically this:

  • 2 tbsp instant coffee
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp hot water
  • 500ml milk
  • Ice (optional)

The first goal is to make a mixture of coffee, water and sugar as frothy as can by whipping it up with a hand mixer — or a whisk if you don’t have one.

Step 2 is layering that foam on top of the milk of your choice, whether it’s hot of iced coffee you want, and voila.

Dalgona coffee went viral as everyone in Luzon and other parts of the country were under enhanced community quarantine in a bid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The measure prompted some of our favorite coffee shops to temporarily close up shop, so it’s great that we can step up our coffee-making skills at home! — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
