Here's how to make good tinola, according to Erwan Heussaff

Erwan Heussaff just stepped into the online battlefield between those who love and those who hate chicken tinola.

In an Instagram video, Erwan saw tinola among the Twitter trends this weekend and was curious to know why.

He then saw a tweet saying that the Filipino dish is "basically chicken water," and apparently, many other people think the same.

"I really feel sorry for that guy. He's probably never tried a really good tinola," Erwan said.

To end this battle once and for all, Erwan shared his recipe on how to make tinola that is definitely not chicken water.

Here are the ingredients:

  • Organic chicken
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Chicken broth
  • Water
  • Green papaya
  • Fish sauce
  • Chili leaves, malunggay or both

Once you've gathered everything you need, just follow these steps:

  1. Sear the chicken then remove from pan.
  2. Cook the ginger and make sure it’s brown.
  3. Add the garlic and chicken.
  4. Add water and chicken broth.
  5. Leave for 40 minutes.
  6. Add fish sauce and green papaya.
  7. Leave for 5 minutes.
  8. Add leaves.
  9. Cook for 3 minutes then serve.

Erwan said that in these times of "uncertainty and frustration," people should "focus their energy on what [they] can change and control" and that includes soup.

After tasting what he made, Erwan said he doesn't understand why people would hate on tinola.

"Why anyone would call this chicken water is beyond me," he said.
