Gordon Ramsay tells aspiring chefs: 'Get comfortable being uncomfortable'
Gordon Ramsay wore his mentor hat to address the young and aspiring chefs in the crowd during an exclusive event at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on Monday.
During the Q&A portion with Gordon, a culinary student from Le Cordon Bleu asked the legendary chef, "What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in school or very early in your career that you still use today?"
Before answering the question, Gordon praised the student for speaking English fluently, which he said would tremendously help his career.
"Get comfortable with being uncomfortable," Gordon responded.
"Understanding the culture is crucial, and traveling is of the essence," he added. "Traveling into different cultures and understanding you never get up to speed with language, but you can speak for the food."
According to Gordon, a chef's 20s is not about taking on more significant responsibilities in the kitchen but about soaking up as much education as possible.
"Never take any job for any salary or just an increase in salary," he said.
"It's not the money you need, it's the knowledge. You just have to keep on going up and down," he added.
At the same event, Gordon announced that he is looking to open three more signature restaurants in the Philippines, including the possibility of a "beautiful Hell's Kitchen."
On his visit to the Philippines, the British chef collaborated on a video with "Lumpia Queen" Abi Marquez for a lumpia version of Beef Wellington.
Gordon is the chef behind several Michelin-starred restaurants, including Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in the UK and Le Pressoir d'Argent in Bordeaux. He's opened restaurants worldwide, including Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill in the Philippines.
