Benedict Cua takes on the P500 Noche Buena challenge

Benedict Cua takes on the P500 Noche Buena challenge

Benedict Cua just tried preparing a Noche Buena spread for P500.

On Instagram, the content creator posted a video of him going to the grocery and the market to buy the ingredients and later cooking at home.

Benedict decided on three dishes: spaghetti, fried chicken, and fruit salad.

He first went to the grocery, where he spent a total of P315.90. This was what he bought:

  • Pasta - P119.50
  • Fruit cocktail - P94.40
  • All-purpose cream - P67
  • Condensed milk - P35

Benedic decided to buy the rest of the ingredients at the market, thinking that prices would be cheaper there. He had P184 remaining from the budget.

This was what he bought at the market, spending all of the cash he had left.

  • Chicken (2 pieces) - P60
  • Ground pork - P50
  • Hotdog (2 pieces) - P20
  • Cooking oil - P25
  • Garlic and onion - P24
  • Pepper - P5

"Ang dami ko pang gustong bilhin na tinapay or soft drinks or iced tea. Sumakit 'yung ulo ko," he said.

Benedict also asked the shopkeepers if they think Noche Buena for P500 is doable, but they said it's not enough.

"Kahit sa spaghetti hindi kasya talaga," one said.

Another got cross with him when he asked the question, saying, "Nagpapatawa ka ba?"

Benedict later prepared all the three dishes at home. After setting the table, he reflected on the P500-budget for Noche Buena that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said was possible for a family of four.

"Posible. Kahit ano naman posible, pero parang hindi siya enough. Ang tagal mong hinintay 'yung Pasko, parang gusto mong mas maghanda ng madami para sa anak mo, asawa mo, buong pamilya mo," he said.

"Sinasabi ko sa sarili ko dapat masaya na ko sa ganito pero nilalagay ko 'yung posisyon ko sa pagiging tatay na ang sakit pala pag ito lang 'yung handa mo," he added. "Hindi ko ma-feel 'yung Pasko."
