What are the astronauts aboard Artemis II eating? NASA shares 'menu of the day'

What are the astronauts aboard Artemis II eating?

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has revealed a menu du jour (menu of the day) for the Artemis II crew as they embark on their historic journey to the Moon.

According to NASA's Instagram Stories, the menu includes familiar favorites like chicken noodle soup, roasted turkey, spaghetti with meat sauce, macaroni and cheese, and mashed potatoes.

Bolder options are also on the menu, such as shrimp curry with rice, chicken with peanut sauce, spicy green beans, vegetable casserole, and sweet and savory kale. For dessert, the crew can enjoy a cosmic brownie, adding a sweet finish to the menu.

The Artemis II crew comprises three American astronauts — mission commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch — and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

Days before the mission, Reid shared on Instagram an adorable photo of the cookies his daughter placed in his luggage.

"When you are packing for the Moon and discover your daughter snuck some cookies she made into your luggage. My heart can’t take it!" he wrote in the caption.

The crew of the Artemis II mission fired up the Orion capsule's engine on April 2, leaving Earth’s orbit and heading toward the Moon.

It is the first crewed flyby mission to the Moon in more than 50 years. It is also the inaugural crewed flight of SLS, NASA's new lunar rocket.

The 10-day Artemis II mission is aimed at paving the way for a Moon landing in 2028.

On Monday, the crew reached the furthest point any human has been from Earth, cruising within the Moon's gravitational sphere of influence and will soon pass over the shadowed, lunar far side.

The Artemis II mission is set to be followed by Artemis III, which aims to "rendezvous in low Earth orbit" with at least one lunar lander. The next phase, Artemis IV, targets a lunar landing in 2028. —Jade Veronique Yap/CDC, GMA News
