While state weather forecasters have yet to officially declare the start of summer, health authorities are already advising the public to take precautions against diseases associated with the hot weather.

National Epidemiology Center head Dr. Enrique Tayag said people are more likely to catch diseases such as sore eyes, colds and sunburn during summer, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.

Tayag was quoted in the report as saying Filipinos should also take precautions against skin diseases and possible diarrhea, due to the food served at fiestas and outings.

He suggested that Filipinos take vitamins and eat nutritious food, as well as drink plenty of water.

Also, Tayag urged the public to maintain proper hygiene and keep their surroundings clean.

They should also drink plenty of water and avoid direct exposure to the hot sun.

Earlier, PAGASA said the northeast monsoon is weakening and may soon give way to the hot summer months.

A separate report on "Saksi" said PAGASA may declare the start of summer as early as next week.

"Usually pagpasok ng March diyan tayo nagde-declare pag summer na. Mararanasan natin medyo iinit na pag ganyan at less na rainfall ang ine-expect natin," said PAGASA forecaster Samuel Duran. —KG, GMA News
