Pharmaceutical firm Janssen Philippines, the University of the Philippines - National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH) and the Foundation for the Advancement of Clinical Epidemiology, Inc. (FACE) will launch the country's first integrated mental health information system next year to address the need for a source providing comprehensive information on mental illness and help for patients.
The creation of the system was prompted by Janssen's Into the Light project, which collects data on schizophrenia cases in the country. The project also works to eliminate the stigma of mental illness by promoting public awareness and understanding of it.
It is the stakeholders' goal to have the database become the basis for sustainable mental health research in the country.
“The creation of effective solutions to address the needs of mental illness patients on a large scale begins with the collation of reliable baseline data,” said project leader Professor Maria Lourdes Amarillo. “From the data, the system will generate information that is useful in planning, programming, policy and decision-making and help the government focus on outcomes-based medication and treatment and prioritize the care of individuals with mental illness, and that of their families and caregivers.”
The system is scheduled to be completed in April 2014 and will be rolled out in 10 pilot sites nationwide in May. — BM, GMA News
