Women’s Health US says goodbye to ‘bikini body’

Trying to get "beach ready" by resolving to hit the gym more and eat better so you can achieve that "bikini body"? Pick up a copy Women's Health, because they have something to say about fitness and body image.

The American magazine is retiring the term "bikini body" along with "drop two sizes" in response to their readers, who wrote to them saying that the goal of being healthy is simply being healthy—not wearing a certain size or looking good in two-piece swimwear.

Editor-in-Chief Amy Keller Laird heeded the calls for more empowering terms and wrote "Dear John" letters to the killed phrases.

Laird bids a not-too-fond farewell to the term "bikini body," saying, "You’re actually a misnomer, not to mention an unintentional insult: You imply that a body must be a certain size in order to wear a two-piece. Any body—every body—is a bikini body. You’ve got a shaming, negative undertone that’s become more than annoying."

She gave the boot gently to "drop two sizes," saying it's welcome to move on to other titles, but it's just no longer welcome on the Women's Health cover.

"Sorry, but women in 2016 want stories that, as one reader so aptly suggested, 'focus on wellness and less on unrealistic weight-loss goals.' Simply put, 'Drop Two Sizes,' it’s over," quipped Laird. — Aya Tantiangco/BM, GMA News
