Viral Baby Sevy gets US visa to get treatment in Memphis for rare leukemia

Newborn Maverick Severin Co has secured a US visa and is just days away from traveling to the United States for leukemia treatment.

Baby Sevy went viral after his parents posted his perilous condition on social media and sought assistance from good Samaritans.

“Para sa lahat ng magulang, mahirap siya to take in the news. Expecting na it’s going to be a happy New Year tapos to find out yung bata may sakit," his father Don said.

"It’s emotionally taxing,” his father Don said.

He got his visa through an expedited appointment at the US Embassy on Tuesday.

Sevy is suffering from ALL or Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

This type of cancer prevents Sevy from producing enough platelets for while causing an overproduction of white blood cells.

This is especially rare for infants like Sevy.

The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee is going to shoulder all treatment costs as well as travel costs for Sevy and his mother.

Co said that St. Jude was quite interested in treating Sevy because the illness was rare among newborns.

Sevy will be travelling with two of his doctors and necessary medical equipment.

The boy is getting blood transfusion every eight hours.

Co said the trip from the Philippines to Memphis could last for more than 24 hours.

Joining Baby Sevy will be his two older sisters aged 4 and 3.

Matching tests will be done on the two girls to check if they can be viable bone marrow donors for their little brother.

The entire Co family is grateful for all the help they’ve been getting.

“Hinihingi ko na ipagdasal ninyo si Baby Sevy. Nakakatulong sa amin ito even sa aming mga magulang. Nakakalakas sa amin na alam namin na hindi kami nag-iisa,” Co said. —NB, GMA News
