What fruits and veggies are good for diabetics?

The food you eat affect your blood sugar levels, so diabetic patients often have to err on the side of caution.

That said, what fruits and vegetables can they eat?

A whole lot, it turns out.

In an episode of Pinoy MD, internist Dr. Rolando Balburias said fruits and vegetables are good for modulating blood sugar.

"Lahat ng prutas, lalo na lahat ng gulay, mabuti 'yan para pag-modulate ng ating blood sugar. 'Yan ang tinatawag nating complex carbohydrates," he said.

However, some fruits would be better for diabetics more than the others.

"Hindi lahat ng prutas ay mabuti rin. Importante sa prutas kung mataas ang ating ORAC score (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity)," he explained.

The ORAC score, to put it simply, measures the antioxidant amount of the fruit.

An example of a fruit with a low ORAC score is mango.

"Hindi masyadong maganda ang mangga, kasi napakataas ng kanyang fructose pero mababa ang kanyang antioxidant capacity," he said.

Malunggay, apparently, is a very good choice of veggies.

"Wala namang superfood na end all be all of everything. Malaki ang matutulong [ng malunggay] in modulation and control of blood sugar," Balburias said.
