What are the harmful effects of volcanic ash to your health?

Department of Health (DOH) issued an advisory after the Taal Volcano erupted on Sunday, warning the public on the possible health effects of volcanic ash.

According to the DOH advisory, volcanic ash has carbon dioxide and fluorine which can cause numerous harmful health effects to a person when exposed to it.

Some of the effects it can cause include eye, nose, throat and skin irritation, cough and discomfort while breathing.

Meanwhile, DOH suggested for the public to stay indoors and close all doors and windows.

It also recommended for people to hang damp curtains as a way to filter the ash from going inside the house.

If they really need to go outdoors, they should wear N95 masks to avoid inhaling volcanic ash, goggles or eye glasses to protect their eyes from irritation.

According to National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), N95 mask "filters at least 95 percent of airborne particles but it is not resistant to oil."

The US Food and Drug Administration said normal face masks do not give the same protection as N95 masks because it is only effective in "blocking splashes and large-particle droplets."

Normal face masks don't provide  "complete protection small particles in the air," because of the "loose fit between the surface of the facemask and your face."

Ash fall can also cause accidents including roof collapse or vehicular accidents due to slippery roads and poor visibility.
